Statement concerning Shingle Springs casino (Why we support the casino project) In the early 1840's as the Europeans first settled in El-Dorado Co., (then still Mexico) they prayed each night for their salvation from the areas indigenousness people out of an overwhelming fear and misunderstanding. A few years later in 1848, these same settlers prayers were answered by the discovery of two shiny gold nuggets in a cold mountain stream near Coloma Ca. creating a gold rush that would lead to statehood, inevitably changing the lives of it's Native American inhabitants forever. From the first moments of the California gold rush, our hills and streams began to over flow with an influx of merciless opportunists who immediately casted a heavy pall over the once beautiful land. Along with the devastation of this gorgeous county by the ravages of mining, it was also then that our history books first began to record the brutalization of local Native American tribes. While the strong were forced into slavery on their own land, the elders, along with the very young, were deemed useless as slaves and put to death by the miners. Others were beaten, raped, starved and their families destroyed as they fought for their very existence, all due to the newcomers' quest of the shiny yellow metal. To this day over 160 years later, it's been our Native Americans who have prayed each night for their salvation from today's continual influx of settlers who still find ways to deny them their most basic and elemental rights as human beings. Fortunately, like the prayers of our fore-fathers, the prayer's of our Native Americans have also been answered. Not with two shiny gold nuggets in a cold mountain steam, but instead, their salvation is coming in the form of a casino that will soon legally employ hundreds of both Native Americans and modern day settlers, benefiting the same local tribes that were once so brutalized. The casino project is located on 160 acres of reservation land between Shingle Springs Drive and Greenstone Rd. North of Highway 50, just minutes from downtown Sacramento. When the first phase is completed late this year, its expansive main gaming hall, massive parking (including valet), huge childcare facility, family fun center and boutiques will be surely outshine anything South Lake Tahoe has to offer. The casino will also include several dining options ranging from intimate cafes and extravagant buffets, to an exquisite four-star steak house covering a wide variety of cuisines to satisfy the most distinguishing palette. The second phase of the casino project, scheduled to open sometime in 2010, will include an elaborate 250 room Hotel along with a sprawling convention center which will someday be the venue for big name entertainment, and much, much more. Unlike most Indian casinos which are 18 and over, this casino will be “Las Vegas style” meaning it will be a 21 and over establishment and will include a special filtration system for those folks who like to smoke while gambling. Copious bars will also be strategically located through-out the casino with cocktail-servers attentively patrolling the gaming floor. Tribal Chairman Nick Fonseca, “Chief” of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, is the man behind the immense project that will benefit El-Dorado County in revenue to the tune of an estimated 290+ million dollars over the next twenty years. An avid motorcycle enthusiast his entire life, Chief Fonseca is not only Tribal Chairman, but he is also a proud member of the legendary Boozefighters Motorcycle Club. ( Founders of the El-Dorado County Food and Toy Drive.)“The road to self-reliance for our tribe has not been an easy or smooth one to say the least, as it was paved with prejudiced against Native Americans and years of hurdles we had to overcome. The steadfast brotherhood and support the tribe and myself have received from my brothers in Sacramento/El-Dorado Boozefighters Motorcycle Club has been a huge help” said Chief Fonseca. For hundreds of years unscrupulous opportunists have formed shaky, one-sided relationships with Native Americans for their own gain, these days are no different. Several organizations and individuals (including local government agencies) from around our county have now begun to step forward, pledging their devotion while requiring substantial monetary reciprocation from the tribe, all in a thinly veiled attempt to line their own pockets. Amounting to nothing more than modern-day snake-oil salesmen, these opportunists along with their organizations are blatantly attempting to extort the tribe for their own gain. Let it be known that, the Sacramento/El-Dorado County Boozefighters Motorcycle Club is not, and never has been such an organization. It is well known throughout the tribal membership that the B.F.M.C. has always proudly supported and bolstered all of the tribes past and present efforts for future self-reliance including the casino project, while never perusing or accepting any personal or organizational profit along the way. Our views along with our support of the tribe stem purely from the love and respect we share for our brother, Tribal Chairman “Chief” Nick Fonseca and his family. The B.F.M.C. has forever committed to support, protect and defend Nick, his family and his tribe from any and all outside aggression as we would anyone affiliated with our brotherhood. Further more, the Sacramento/El-Dorado Co. Boozefighters Motorcycle Club has always felt that despite the copious years which have passed since the atrocities of our gold rush days, still, the continued day-to-day oppression and endless persecution of our Native Americans makes all time stand irrelevant in washing away the sins of our fore-fathers. We as a society should no longer pray for deliverance or seek to profit from our Native Americans but rather, pray for their forgiveness while vigorously supporting all their efforts for future self-reliance.
